Yesterday, 75,000 people marched on the state capitol in the largest teacher walkout in national history. Teachers, parents, school staff and community members spoke up together to demand the resources our children need to succeed. And how did our legislature react? By adjourning early for the weekend.
Enough is enough. We cannot wait for the day when our elected officials finally wake up. We think it’s time for Arizonans to take the power back into their own hands, and time for those who can afford it to invest in education.
Earlier today, a coalition of community groups filed the #InvestinEd ballot initiative. The initiative would create a secure funding source to keep great teachers in Arizona classrooms and give our students the one-on-one attention they need to be successful. And it does so in a responsible way: by asking those who can afford it to pay their fair share.
Ducey responded by announcing yet another empty “deal” with no details. Enough. It’s time to stop waiting on our governor and our legislators. It’s time for us to lead.
